This 1920s dress features elaborate embroidery which in its patterning suggests Ottoman influences. Owing to its eclectic mix of influences it is believed to have been made in Western Europe, drawing on Ottoman motifs and Eastern European embroidery techniques. It is a rare surviving example of dress that represents fashion outside the mainstream in the early decades of the twentieth century.

Black silk crepe dress with Ottoman-influenced embroidery, 1920s, possibly British.
Physical description
Full-length, sleeveless black silk crepe dress with a round neckline, lined with silk. This dress is loose and virtually straight-cut but is slightly elasticated at the hips. The front of the dress is fully covered with Ottoman-influenced embroidery in silk thread, which continues onto the bottom third of the back of the dress.
