| Historical context | The Abbasi dynasty of Daudputra were said to be of Arab origin and claimed descent from Abbas, the progenitor of the Abbasid Caliphs of Baghdad and Cairo. The title in English and Persian above the head of the ruler names him only as "Nawab Mohammad Bahawell Khan Abbasee"/Nawab Muhammad Bahawal Khan Abbasi, but the style of the painting suggests he is the third to hold this name. He ruled from 1826-1852 and made treaties with the HEIC in 1833 and 1835. His successor, Nawab Muhammad Bahawal Khan IV, ruled from 1858-66. |
