Al Frueh (1880-1968) was an American cartoonist and caricaturist for The New Yorker magazine from 1925 to 1962. This print forms part of a portfolio of caricatures, Stage Folk: A Book of Caricatures by Frueh, published by Lieber & Lewis in 1922.

The print is a caricature of David Warfield (1866-1951) and Marie Bates (1854?-1923) in <i>The Auctioneer</i>, a comedy by David Belasco, Charles Klein and Lee Arthur. Warfield came to fame when he first appeared in the play in 1901, playing Simon Levi, an impoverished auctioneer who comes into money. He returned to the role throughout his career, playing Levi 1,400 times. Marie Bates had a long career as a character actress.
