Iolanthe was Gilbert & Sullivan's seventh operatic work together, opening at the Savoy Theatre on 25th November 1882 and running for 398 performances. The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company toured the production almost continuously from 1891 and 1982.
The Empire Theatre in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, was built in 1908 by Maurice Bandman. Bandman was a theatre impresario who developed theatrical entertainments in India and the Far East in the early 20th century. Through his successful touring company the Bandman Opera Company he built and leased the Empire Theatre under Bandman Varieties Ltd., and opened theatres in Egypt and the Empire Theatre in Gibraltar. His theatres hosted touring companies who attracted audiences with contemporary plays and musical comedies.
The Empire Theatre Calcutta was converted from an opera house to a cinema in the 1940s and currently survives as the Roxy Cinema.

Object history | This silk programme was produced for the staging of Iolanthe at the Empire Theatre Calcutta on Wednesday 13th December 1922. It was performed in the presence of the Viceroy and Lady Reading, by the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Co. of Australia by permission of Mr. R. D'Oyly Carte. The cast was led by Charles Workman as the Lord Chancellor, with stage direction by Dick Shortland and musical direction by Walter Hann. |
