Marks and inscriptions | MR. WILLIAM TERRISS AS BUCKLAW.
Our Artist has drawn from a recollection a portrait of Mr. Terriss as Bucklaw, the rival of the Master of Ravenswood in the Lyceum play, as in the novel. The dramatist has possibly not greatly improved the original character by the modifications found necessary to make it harmonise with its present surroundings. but as the part stands in relation to the story, and to the other personages of Mr. Merivale's piece, Bucklaw is an interesting figure - almost a strong one. Mr Terriss, who must have been heartily tired of representing the persecuted but triumphant hero of everyday melodrama, returns no doubt with zest to the kind of work in which he won his earlier successes. His Bucklaw is distinct and vigorous, and, thoroughly artistic throughout, it is, where possible, as in the more sympathetic episodes towards the close, marked with the force of genuine feeling. |
