Place of origin

Susan Hilferty's designs for the musical Wicked were inspired by William Wallace Denslow's illustrations to Frank Baum's 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and for Elphaba's dress she also did research on natural forms, on the colour and texture of birds, and of rocks and oil spills. She did hundreds of sketches of the hat to get it right, and its curved upswept brim was designed for maximum visibility of Elphaba's face.

Wicked has broken box office records in cities around the world since its opening at Broadway's Gershwin Theatre in 2006. The musical tells the story of the witches of Oz, and focuses on the relationship between the two witches Elphaba and Glinda. Susan Hilferty has designed costumes for more than 300 productions all around the world, and in 2004 was awarded the Tony Award for best costume design and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Costume Design for her designs for Wicked.
