Object history
According to Rodney Searight: `Bt fr PHW May 1973 £25'.
Historical context
Illustrated in Walsh, Constantinople, Fisher, [1838 etc.], vol.I, facing p.71, engraved by by W. Floyd, as `Philadelphia. Called by the Turks, Allah Sher, `the City of God.'.
An oil version was among a series depicting `The Seven Churches of Asia Minor' painted for George Virtue and engraved for The Art Journal in 1863. The modern Turkish name for Philadelphia is now Alashehir, which does not mean `the City of God'.
