Object history

Historical context
Ali Pasha (1744?-1822) `The Lion' of Ioannina, though nominally a vassal of the Ottoman Sultan, became master of Epirus, Albania and Thessaly. Eventually, the Sultan, threatened by his ambition, had him killed; his head was sent to Constantinople and his body buried in the mausoleum of his first wife Fatima outside his palace at Ioannina. In the courtyard between the serai and the tomb, the mounted game of cirid (jereed) is being played.
