The Hackney Empire in London is well known for its annual Christmas pantomime. Actor Clive Rowe has appeared as the pantomime Dame ten times at the venue since 1998. This costume for Rowe as Mother Goose takes its inspiration from nursery rhymes. It features scenes from ‘Little Miss Muffet’, ‘Three Blind Mice’ and ‘The Cow that Jumped over the Moon’.

Physical description | S.594:1-2016 Nursery Rhyme dress. Knee length dress with full skirt, with row of decorative pink buttons, centre front, integral white collar with magenta trimming, and net petticoat. The dress is decorated with appliqué pictures of nursery rhyme characters. On the skirt, a hillside with, on wearer's left, a figure of Miss Muffet being menaced by an attached chenille spider hanging from a web appliquéd on the bodice, and, on wearer's right, a well with an overturned bucket. On the left sleeve, a cow jumping over a crescent moon, with diamanté stars; on the right sleeve, three blind mice. S.594:2-2016 Blue rayon mob cap with magenta edging and band. S.594:3-2016 Red leather kitten-heel right shoe, made by Gamba, probably size 9 or 10. S.594:4-2016 Red leather kitten-heel left shoe, made by Gamba, probably size 9 or 10. |

Object history | The Nursery Rhyme costume is designed to be worn over a second costume, the Jamaican flag 'Hussein Bolt' running tunic (S.595:1 to 4-2016) that is revealed as a quick-change effect. The Jamaican flag costume includes a turban with attached ringlets and hoop earrings that is worn under the mob cap when the Dame is in the Nursery Rhyme dress. The turban is initially concealed under the mob cap and is Velcro-ed to it in performance. |
