‘Gluklya’ (Natalya Pershina-Yakimanskaya) is a member of the movement Cho Delat? (What is to be Done?), an alliance of politically activist artists, writers, critics and philosophers which was founded in Saint Petersburg in 2003. This image is a sketch for the Partisan Songspiel, for which Gluklya designed the sets and costumes. The ‘songspiels’ are narrative films central to Chto Delat?’s practice. Modelled on the early 20th-century musical theatre of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, the songspiels present political and social issues through the accessible and often humorous medium of song. The image of the ‘finger object’ comes from the story of a worker who cut off his finger during a hunger strike.
