The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world's largest arts festival. It began in 1947 when eight theatre groups staged 'fringe' productions alongside the legitimate Edinburgh International Festival. Since the forming of the Festival Fringe Society in 1958, the festival has grown to include theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events. It has become a national emblem of artistic creativity.

In 1980 the Edinburgh Festival Fringe launched its first Schools Poster Competition, inviting pupils to present 'what the Festival means to them'. Now hailed as one of Scotland's longest-running arts outreach projects, it has developed into a Fringe event itself, with an exhibition held for the finalists and the winning design used throughout the Fringe's marketing.
