Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This hanging is one of a set of four that were probably designed to decorate a doorway pilaster. Pilasters are flat columns that formed part of the wooden panelling of an interior.
The long rectangular shaft of a pilaster was suited to narrow, vertical decoration, in the form of carvings, or for hangings such as here. Decoration for pilaster hangings typically included stylised floral motifs and scrolling foliage.
