Place of origin |
With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman, the musical Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1990 novel Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, an alternative adult perspective on the 1939 MGM film The Wizard of Oz and Frank Baum’s original 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a tale about longing for home and making do on one's own resources.
Wicked has broken box office records in cities around the world and has proved hugely popular on both sides of the Atlantic since its opening at Broadway's Gershwin Theatre in 2003 and at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre, 27th September 2006. The musical tells the story of the witches of Oz and centres on the relationship between the two witches Elphaba and Glinda, but the dramatic effect of the green skin and fiery personality of Elphaba has made hers the one with which people most readily associate the musical and which takes centre stage on this poster.
