Object history
This pendant is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. It was bought as new from a jewellers,'Sorna Mahal', Rm. Appavu Chettiar Sons, 156-158 South Avani Moola Street, Madurai on 26th December 1996. It cost 1200 Rupees, of which 1016.40 Rupees were the value of the gold and 183.60 was the cost of the goldsmith's work.
Historical context
According to the jeweller thalis of this design are worn by members of the Konar, Yadava and Iyengar castes of Tamil Nadu.
