Place of origin

Watercolour of Telemachus discovering the priest of Apollo. To the left, there is a Doric temple surrounded by an encroaching forest. The elderly priest stands on the temple steps, reading a book. Telemachus walks barefoot, with his arms outstretched, and his head turned in profile to look at the priest.

The scene comes from François Fénelon's Les Aventures de Télémaque, Book II: "I plunged into a dark forest, where I suddenly perceived an old man with a book in his hand. . .. He was a priest of Apollo, whom he served in a marble temple which the kings of Egypt had consecrated in the forest. The book which he held was a collection of hymns in honour of the gods."

Signed and dated in the bottom right corner.
