Gallery label | William Etty devoted his career to painting the nude figure. He was the only major British painter of his generation to do so, and despite accusations of indecency from a hostile press he achieved both critical and popular success. Etty used rich, warm colours, and here the red and yellow fabrics emphasise the lustrous flesh tones. |
