Avoid AIDS

Poster
1987 (published)
Place of origin

The 1996 V&A exhibition ‘Graphic Responses to AIDS’ highlighted the different techniques and media being used by designers in graphic work relating to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The curator, Shaun Cole, collected more than 100 posters from around the world for the display. This poster was given by the Health Education Division of the Bahamas Ministry of Health.

At 3%, the Bahamas has the third highest prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. While HIV continues to spread, the government’s AIDS programme has had significant success in tracking and curbing the epidemic. A relatively rich nation, the Bahamas has been able to spend more than some of its neighbours on HIV/AIDS control and prevention. Major public information campaigns, of which this 1987 poster was a part, have played an important role in reducing cases of HIV/AIDS.
