Chair made of black walnut with caned seat. The turned front legs are connected to the shaped square section rear legs by two curved stretchers on each side. Two more stretchers connect the front legs. The seat rails are tennoned to the legs. A secondary seat frame is attached to the top of the seat rails and encloses a heart-shaped panel of caning. The rear legs rise to become the sides of the back and are tennoned into a broad top rail pierced with two hand holes. The back splat is comprised of five shaped uprights suggesting the shape of a 'W'

About 1901
Apprenticed as a restorer and decorator in his hometown of Münster, Pankok eventually studied painting in Düsseldorf and Berlin. He worked as a portrait painter and graphic artist but proved to be a remarkable designer of furniture with a keen grasp of woodworking technique and detailing. From 1913 until 1937 he headed the Lehr- und Versuchswerkstätte (School of Applied Art) in Stuttgart where he designed buildings as well as ship and Zeppelin interiors.
