Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Seven designs for brackets for gas lighting, about 1865-1872, by the metalworker Francis Skidmore (1817-1896) at his firm Skidmore's Art Manufactures Company, Coventry (founded in 1865). From the 1850s, Skidmore had a particular interest in a new invention which was that of gas lighting. His firm installed it in three buildings in Coventry: the medieval St Mary's Hall, Coventry, in 1850, a year later, in St Michael's Church, and in 1856, in the Holy Trinity Church. A gas lamp standard in the latter church has similar decoration to these designs. They are in the style of the Gothic Revival, a movement showing an increasing interest in medieval design and architecture, linked to that of the aims to reform the Church in England, from the 1830s.
