Online fundraising for new designs
The crowdfunding platform Kickstarter was established in 2009 and allows people to pledge money towards products which are realised if they reach their funding targets. The Pebble became the first commercially successful smartwatch after it raised over $10million on the platform. The Kano Complete computer – a build-your-own computing and coding system – was also backed through Kickstarter. Crowdfunding platforms offer designers alternative ways of reaching a market and give consumers a sense of investment in new and innovative products.
