Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Kilns in northern China have a long tradition of producing blackwares with iron-rich glazes and distinct surface effects. In this example dated to the Jin dynasty (1115-1234) the black iron-rich glaze is painted with a glaze containing a slightly different iron oxide content. After firing, the design acquired a silvery colour, making a pleasant contrast with the black ground.

This vase was donated in 1934 by Bluett & Sons, one of the most established commercial firms dealing in Chinese antiquities in Londo.
