This short sleeve, knee-length dress with side slits at the hem is known as a 'cheongsam' in Cantonese or a 'qipao' in Mandarin. It is made from brown silk velvet with an allover pattern consisting of flower basket, 'shou' (longevity) symbol, gourd, lotus flower and flute/sword; lined with burnt orange plain-weave silk.
The dress has a stand-up, stiffened collar closed with a metal hook and eye, seven metal snap fasteners across the collarbone to the right side and a zip-fastener in the side seam.
