This over-dress or Tangtsag, was worn over a brocade chuba by noblewomen in Tibet for important celebrations or one’s own wedding. Such garments were always used when the full set of seven types of traditional jewellery were worn on such special occasions.

Physical description | A sleeveless overdress consisting of several vertical bands of woven and dyed wool stitched together, the bands are wider at the bottom than at the top. Two front facing bands of rainbow colours alternate with pale yellow bands stamped with tig ma or crosses in red and blue. These coloured vertical bands are sandwiched between plain dark purple dyed vertical woven woolen bands. Each shoulder/armhole is edged with gold brocade featuring geometric patterns. The garment has a central front opening. Two slits at the back are each 31 cms long. |
