More than two-thirds of Shenzhen’s inhabitants are migrants attracted by the Chinese city’s rapid growth and employment opportunities. Street food vendors in the city offer regional cuisines from across the country to a diverse Chinese workforce who often have few local family ties and frequently eat out. For parents who work away from home, the soft toy Mon-Mon enables them to stay in touch with their children. By squeezing its tummy, a child can listen to, or record, voice messages via the social media platform WeChat.
