Anthony Gross (1905-1984) was a painter and printmaker. He also illustrated a number of books. He is best known for his etchings, which are characterised by dense decorative line and texture, often achieved by the use of unconventional printmaking tools. This is one of three prints from the sequence of six which he made to illustrate the livre d’artiste ‘Sixe Idyllia, chosen out of the Sicilian Poet Theocritus’ (1971). There is a copy of the book in the National Art Library.
