Place of origin

Touring (also called The Sports Ballet and Touring Review) was choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska for her Theatre Chorégraphique Nijinska and first performance by them on 7 August 1925 at the Winter Gardens, Bournemouth. Touring was a ballet of contemporary life and sports for the full company. It appears to have taken inspiration from Francis Poulenc’s Promenades (1921), using six of the ten piano solos to focus on a variety of transportation and locomotion. Touring, described by Allan Ulrich as ‘an epic about transportation, incorporating utilitarian objects, metal safety reflectors and riding crops’ was one of the most popular productions for the Theatre Chorégraphique and the Aviators solo appears to have been re-staged for the Teatro Colon 1926. Nijinska had a good relationship with Poulenc who admired her Les Biches another ballet of contemporary life on which they had collaborated the previous year.

An alternative annotated design with sheepskin collar (not used) is in the Bronislava Nijinska Collection in the Library of Congress

The costume (in very poor condition) is now in the V&A's Theatre & Performance Collection
