Toole had already staged J.M. Barrie's first London play, Ibsen's Ghost, running for just 27 performances at his theatre Toole's, from 30 May 1891. In 1892 he directed and starred in the première of , Walker, London, Barrie's first hit play, which ran for 497 performances. The cast included the 21-year old Seymour Hicks and the 19-year old Irene Vanburgh, both of whom went on to become great stars. It also included the 30-year old Mary Ansell who met Barrie when Jerome K. Jerome suggested her for the part in the play, and who became Barrie's wife in 1894, and George Shelton who went on to play the pirate Smee in Barrie's Peter Panat the Duke of York's Theatre in 1904
