Design for V&A members week bag

Design

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

V&A Members’ Week began in 2011 as a week-long celebration of all that the V&A Membership has to offer. In 2012 a free tote bag giveaway was introduced and as Zandra Rhodes was the weeks’ key evening speaker, she was approached to design a motif for the bag. A total of 2000 bags were produced to be given away free to members.

Rhodes was given a very concise brief for the design stipulating that it should include her name along with the words ‘Members’ Week.’ It also had to fit into the dimensions of a 245 x 275mm box, with the V&A Logo incorporated into one of the corners.

Zandra Rhodes (b. 1940) is an English fashion and textile designer, well known for her dramatic, glamorous and extrovert style. She has designed clothes for Diana, Princess of Wales, Elizabeth Taylor and Freddie Mercury. Since 2000 Rhodes has been designing sets and costumes for opera. Additionally she set up the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey, London, which opened in 2003.
