The photograph features a scene with four figures, two male, two female. A long table dominates the foreground with Lewis (Millwood) seated at the extreme left end, and Thesiger (Barnwell) seated at the extreme right end. Thesiger and Lewis are looking away from one another, their heads resting on their hands and their gaze directed towards the viewer. Two futher figures are visible in the background of the image, they are positioned beside a piano, the woman is seated in front of, and is playing, the instrument, whilst the man stands behind her, a sheet of music held between his hands.
