Beatrix Potter is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.
It has been suggested that the undated watercolour study on the front of this sheet is a view of Stoney Lane in Near Sawrey, the Lake District. Beatrix Potter first visited the Lake District aged sixteen when the family stayed at Wray Castle and over the next twenty years they spent many of their summers in the area. Following Beatrix Potter’s purchase of Hill Top in Near Sawrey in 1905 she had further opportunities to draw the area surrounding Esthwaite Water, her favourite lake, and she made studies of Near Sawrey in all seasons. Following her marriage to Lakeland solicitor William Heelis in 1913, aged 37, the area became her permanent home. There is an additional sketch showing a house on the verso of this sheet.
