Jimoh Okolo was a founding member of the Zaria Art Society (1958-62), along with Bruce Onobrakpeya, Yusuf Grillo and other art students at the Zaria branch of the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology. The group promoted the theory of ‘natural synthesis’, a concept that merged the best of the indigenous art traditions, forms and ideas with those from the West. The paintings and sculptures of the Zaria Art Society incorporated cosmology, folklore and Nigerian philosophy, together with depictions of everyday life in Nigeria.
