Abraham Ragueneau (Raguineau) was born in London in 1623. Very little is known about him but he was active as a painter in The Hague, 's-Hertogenbosch, Leiden and Zierikzee in the Dutch Republic, now the Netherlands. Signed by the artist and dated 1663, Ragueneau's whereabouts that year is unknown but by 1664, he was working in The Hague. It is possible that this portrait was painted there.

Historical context | This painting shows a gentleman dressed in black as fashion required in Holland during mid 17th century. The placement of the sitter in a three-quarter pose to the left suggests that it may have been originally provided with a pendant. |
