Bibliographic reference
The following excerpt is from p. 105 of Aubrey Beardsley: A Catalogue Raisonné, Volume II, Linda Gertner Zatlin, Yale University Press, 2016: 'Brandon Thomas, the original owner of the drawing [of which this is a reproduction print] identified Lady Gold as the Baroness Burdett-Coutts....The heiress to Coutts Bank and a vast fortune, Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts (1814-1906) was a generous philanthropist who gave more than £3 million to good causes before her death; she was the first woman to be created a Baroness in her own right....But to identify the figure of the woman in Beardsley's drawing as the philanthropist is baffling. Ultimately one cannot draw any conclusion from Lady Gold's identity in the world beyond the drawing other than that she was a magnet for hangers-on and they are, as indicated by the title, Beardsley's subject in this drawing'.
