This is one of two prints published by John Bell on 28th April 1792 after paintings of the play Tancred and Sigismunda at Covent Garden Theatre in 1791. It depicts the moment before Osmond kills Sigismunda. Tancred, who later duels with Osmond and kills him, looks on.
Tancred was played in this production by the actor, manager and dramatist Joseph George Holman (1764- 1817) who made his first stage appearance at Covent Garden in October 1784 as Romeo, and first played Tancred in James Thomson's play Tancred and Sigismunda at Covent Garden Theatre on 21st December 1791. The play, written in 1745, centres on the tragic conflict between love and duty in which Tancred, descendant of the murdered King Manfred, and Sigismunda, daughter of Siffreidi, are embroiled.
