These books with decorated cardboard covers were awarded to the top geography student at a French boarding school in 1855. They demonstrate the emergence of trade bindings in the 19th century: their covers were designed by the publisher rather than by a bookbinder. The pages have been prepared using machinery and are glued together instead of being sewn by hand.
