Physical description
Blotter cover: papier mache with mother-of-pearl inlay and painted lily of the valley design,
Gallery label
This papier-mâché cover with its painted lily of the valley design and shimmering mother-of-pearl underlay was an affordable alternative to the luxury tortoiseshell bindings that had been popular since the 17th century. Such covers were used on gift books, often containing poetry, but the versatile combination of materials also lent itself to the manufacture of household objects including snuff boxes, trays and furniture.
