Place of origin

Broadside poster or playbill advertising the benefit performance of Mr Handy on 29 October 1798. The venue is not mentioned on the playbill but all the participants were appearing at the New Circus, Hull, in October 1798.

The evening featured equestrian acts, a new comic dance called 'The Cobler: Or, the Beau Outwitted'; a dance called 'The Merry Jockeys; or; a Trip to York Races', comic songs, a 'jingling match', slack rope vaulting, the equestrian comedy 'The Taylor Riding to Brentford', performed by Mr Crossman, and a pantomime, Harlequin's Frolics.

Mr Handy, described as 'CLOWN to the Whole of the ENTERTAINMENTS', is also responsible for the fireworks which conclude the evening and celebrate 'the Victory obtained by the Gallant Admiral NELSON'. Nelson had defeated the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile in August 1798, but news of the victory did not reach London until early October. There was general rejoicing at Nelson's triumph, and feasts and celebrations were held throughout the country.
