Carpet
Place of origin |
Dating from the time of the Russian occupation of Afghanistan (1979-89), such rugs are a well-known type. This is the first example of an Afghan war rug acquired by the V&A. Though the designs on these rugs are often quite crude, this example has an unusually subtle design. It is believed that the objects on the red ground are Russian jets while the armoured personnel carriers are Soviet BTR-70s, and some are on railway transport. Other motifs seem more obscure, although they could be representational.
