Nose Ring
20th century (made)
Place of origin |
The gold nose ring is mounted with flat-cut diamonds in a kundan setting of a loosely bird-like design with little gold rings along the lower edge (originally designed for coiled wire pendant attachments for a fringe of beads, probably seed pearls, which are now all missing). |The upper side of these rings was originally enamelled in red, but with only remnants remaining The outer side of the design is enamelled in a bright vitreous green. The reverse side has a back plate which is delicately enamelled (meenakari) with a spray of flower buds in soft yellow, pink and blue over white. The topmost leaves and the tip of one flower have lost their enamelling. The spurs of the back plate covering the rings for pendant attachments have been enamelled in dark blue. Here again some enamelling is now missing. A gold ring on either side at the top provides a fastening for a gold wire loop which is coiled round the right hand ring with a hook at the other end to fasten into the other ring.

Object history | This nose ring is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. It was bought from the dealer, Michael Beste on 25th October 2007 for 840 Euros. |

Dr Ganguly includes this ring in her chapter on nose rings from Himachal Pradesh, although she concedes that it was probably manufactured in Uttar Pradesh. The enamel painting reminded her of work done in Varanasi. |
