Bulak Nose Ornament

Large gold crescent-shaped bulak made of rows of granulation and plain and twisted wire. The inner part of the centre has a scrolling palmette under a pointed arch which is embellished with small gold discs picked out in green and orange translucent enamel. A centrally positioned crescent backed with a gold sheet is filled with dark navy blue enamel spotted in gold. A gold wire U-shaped loop is hinged on the right hand side of the back at the top of the enamelled crescent and wrapped with a section of twisted gold wire which is echoed on the other side at the top of a gold cylinder soldered to the other side of the enamelled crescent into which the tapered end of the loop is inserted.

This nose ring is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent.
