Italian designer Gianfranco Ferré trained as an architect before establishing his own fashion line in 1978. He was appointed creative director of Christian Dior in 1989 and remained until 1996. Ferré was awarded the prestigious Dé d’or (‘Gold thimble’) for his first haute couture collection at Dior, autumn/winter 1989.

This jacket is from the Christian Dior spring/summer 1993 ready-to-wear collection and was worn by Evangeline Bruce, who had been a Dior client since the founding of the House in 1947.

Physical description
Evening jacket in blue and white striped silk taffeta with an exaggerated and puffed peplum, and lined in white silk. Large gold flower buttons are studded all over with small diamantés. Full sleeves caught in at the wrist and pleated into the shoulder with exposed pin tucks.

Acquired as a 1960s jacket, but the style, manufacture, and details are definitely 1980s/early 90s, and particularly in the style of Gianfranco Ferré who was at Dior in the early 1990s.
