Nose Ring
20th century (made)
Place of origin |
A gold nose ring, nath, with a thick gold wire loop which is hooked at the upper end on the left hand side to be slotted into an eye of twisted gold wire which is decorated with coils of thinner gold wire and wire wrapped in even finer gold wire. The lower arc of the ring is threaded with a series of alternate hollow faceted and round gold beads. The faceted beads have granulated rings on each side giving the appearance of spacers. Above these beads there is a gold plate with an undulating top ornamented with lines of granulation and applied wirework following the dipping profile on top which is embellished with a row of gold pinheads, the stems of which are fused to the back plate and radiate out to its lower edge where they are twisted over the lower loop of the ring to keep it in place. Three dark red glass stones are set along this edge and a number of small pendant gold discs are attached in clusters of twos and threes across this ornamental element. A quatrefoil with three green glass stones and a small die-stamped lozenge above are fringed with granulation. Another dark red glass stone is applied underneath on another die-stamped element which is also fringed with granulation.

Credit line | Given by Dr W. Ganguly |
Object history | Dr Ganguly purchased this nose ring from the German dealer, Hans Weihreter, in Augsburg in 1994. It resembles a nose ring illustated in Oppi Untracht's book. This nose ring is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. |
