This hat was made by the London milliner Madame Vernier to accompany a Jacques Heim formal day ensemble called 'Aubepine' (see T.135:1-2-1998). Once completed, the hat was packed in a hatbox and couriered to the Heim atelier in London. The huge blue roses and leaves almost completely conceal the small skull cap underneath. Small hats with exaggerated floral decorations were fashionable during the 1960s, contrasting with the floppy, wide-brimmed cloth or straw hats that were also worn, mainly by younger women.
