Nose Ring

Gold nose ring, nath, made of gold wire with one hooked end which slots into the other twisted looped end. It is decorated with clusters of suspended seed pearls, two of which terminate with a dangling ruby bead either side of two larger pearls and an oblong ruby bead which are threaded onto the ring. A round crystal is set in gold and surrounded with seed pearls. This is attached to the hammered gold ring by means of a gold loop at the back wedged into place with a small piece of base metal. A small floral patera made up of seed pearls is attached to the ring with twisted slender gold wire.

This nose ring is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. It was purchased by Dr. Ganguly from the dealer, Michael Beste, December 2008
