A nose ring made from a open U-shaped gold loop, onto the lower part of which is threaded and soldered a lozenge-shaped element with roundels at each corner. The central part is inset with translucent glass and the four corner roundels are inset with red glass. Threaded and tied beneath this is a looped element made of a row of gold beads edged on either side with tiny seed pearls attached by twisted wires to a concertina-effect of radiating folded wire-work visible from the back. A further duo of a red glass and a silver beadare separated by two small granulated gold rings situated next to the double twisted terminal loop which acts as a fixing to receive the other hooked end of the nose ring. A small jhumka (bell-shaped pendant) in gold with pendant hollow gold beads is attached by a gold link to the looped closure.

Object history | Dr Ganguly purchased this nose ring from Amrapali, Jaipur for 269 euros on 30th July 2007. This nose ring is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. |
