A convex rakodi in gold with a rim of red stones surrounding an open-work stylised image of a peacock set with red stones(rubies?) and a flat-cut white stone set into the wing and two small green stones. The concave back is made of a poorer grade of gold with a central slot and two small rings intended as a fastening.

Object history
This head ornament is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. She bought it from Vummidi, jewellers in Chennai, in October 1998 for 7700 Rupees
