The gold necklace is made up of identical units threaded on to two textile cords and linked together with wire rings that connect pendant elements. These inverted tear-drop convex fringe ornaments made fron sheet gold are embellished with small pendant balls ( grelots). At the head of each unit there is a ball finial with a granulated finial. At either end the cords pass through a wedge-shaped unit embossed with a kirttimukha design and are bound in black thread on the other side. The necklace is fastened with a modern gilt S-shaped fastening linked to three metal chain links. The wedge-shaped units, fringe and quatrefoil decorative elements have been tinted with a copper-red pigment.

Object history | This necklace is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. It was shown at the exhibition in the Goldschmiedehaus, Hanau, Germany, 18 October 2013 - 18 January 2014. It was purchased from the jewellery dealer, Hans weihreter, Augsburg in December 1997 for 6675 D.M. |
