A silver choker, katesari, made of silver decorative units set with foil-backed glass strung onto strands of dark red threads. The upper tier of silver units are made of quatrefoils set with colourless glass backed with gold foil with central silver die-stamped roundels. These elements are strung between the divided threads of the cotton cord. A row of suspended arched units with pendant grelots are strung in between the pairs of lower rings of the quatrefoil elements. These too are set with glass backed with gold foil and embellished with an auspicious central red dot, tikka.

Object history
This necklace is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. It was purchased from Mahendra, a jewellery dealer in Delhi, in November 2012 for 325 Euros.
Historical context
Chokers of this type were worn by the women of the Tharu tribe, usually in association with other silver ornaments. See Untracht
