A long silver necklace made of six triple chains attached to shaped silver sheet pacers with a pendant large shaped silver medallion at the base. The pendant has repoussé decoration in filled with green and blue enamel. An image of a crowned four-armed deity bearing weapons, which may represent Durga. She sits astride a lion between a standing figure on the left hand side and a rampant animal on the right. The head and neck of a crested bird lies beneath her. The smaller silver spacer medallions are also decorated in green and blue enamel with foliated designs. The pendant has nine soldered rings soldered on the lower edge which support clusters of silver bells linked to small blue and green enamelled silver trefoil medallions, each linked to the large medallion with an S-shaped link ornamented by a floral motif on a square sheet soldered over the centre. The links of the main part of the necklace (har), are made of floral motifs linked to pairs of flattened wire loops pinched at the centre and clipped in with a piece of beaded wire. A pair of large S-shaped links embellished with a floral setting of small turquoises soldered on top connects the necklace with the pendant.The top of the necklace has three lengths of these links without any floral elements.

Object history | This necklace is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. It was shown at the exhibition in the Goldschmiedehaus, Hanau, Germany, 18 October 2013 - 18 January 2014. |
