A diamond-cut gold loop with a hook at one end and hinged at the other. The lower part of the piece is decorated with a peacock, its body being enamelled but its tail is cast in silver with white sapphires in claw settings. Similar European-style claw settings are used for the series of white sapphires set along the lower edge in a tear drop shape with a central emerald, a flower and another single emerald flanked by two further white sapphires. The ring has an attached silver chain of clove-like links set with small white sapphires and a terminal hook to be worn in the hair.

Object history | Dr Ganguly purchased this nose ring from Rampal Soni, New Delhi, in November 2010. This nose ring is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. |
Historical context | This nose ring was made for an urban and sophisticated Indian lady, and it was not made in a traditional way. |
